A garbage truck struck and killed a homeless man found in a Loop alley Tuesday with head trauma, police said.

A security guard called police early Tuesday after seeing the body of the man identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office as John Madden in the middle of an alley at 1 S. State St.

The incident was reported to police about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to police News Affairs Sgt. Antoinette Ursitti.

Madden, 59, who had been staying at the Pacific Garden Mission, on the 1400 block of South Canal Street, was pronounced dead at 6:04 a.m. Tuesday at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

Madden was covered with something, possibly a blanket or a cardboard box and he was in the middle of the alley when police believe a garbage truck whose driver did not see the man in the alley struck him.

The garbage truck was not a city truck, according to Department of Streets and Sanitation spokesman Matt Smith.

A nearly-empty 40-ounce bottle of beer was found near Maddon's body, police said.

The alley where Madden was found is behind the building which is the former home of the Carson Pirie Scott department store.

The driver of the garbage truck had not been cited with anything as of Wednesday morning.

The medical examiner’s office said Madden suffered head trauma and an autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.

Belmont Area detectives and the police Major Accident Investigation Unit are conducting an "open" death investigation, pending the results of the autopsy.
